Measurement and Data
Duration: 3 weeks
Main Standards of the Unit:
Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit
Additional Standards (to try to integrate where appropriate throughout the unit and in science)
Represent and Interpret Data
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection
Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit
- Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ....
- Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale

Linear Measurement: Metric
Conceptual Lesson
Relationships in the Metric System – Sizing Up Measurement 3-5 p. 41-43 *Add a Conversion Table*
Notes: Hands-on Experience to draw connections between metric centimeters, decimeters, and meters. Students write statements about relationships and debate the statements. Be sure to connect to the decimal work, including the 10 x 10 grid.
Constructing to Build Deeper Understanding
ME 5-1 (master M10): Students construct a meter stick. (possible adaption - use centimeter paper and have students do more thinking rather than having it pre-marked for them.) – begin to visualize kilometers.
Application of the Concept (measuring things)
Investigations, Unit 4
Investigation 1, Session 1.1: Measurement Benchmarks (TE p. 22/Student Book p. 2 - could adapt p. 1 by only using metric)
Extensions or Menu Item:
ME Student Book p. 7
ME Differentiated Instruction Universal Access Activities (ME TE p. 457)
Itools: Measurement
Practice
ME Math Journal 5-1, p. 178 (extends to kilometers)
