Lesson:  Investigations, Unit 5, Investigation Session 3.3 -  Finding the Number of Squares in an Array
Focus on ways to count arrays and ways to split arrays to strategically find the number of squares.
**Have students check array cards and make sure they are accurate and done well.**
With extra time - have them pull out the 1's, 5's, and 10's - put in a separate baggie - play array war.

Materials:
Chart paper
Arranging Chairs materials See Session 3.1.
Making Array Cards materials See Session 3.2.
Chart paper Write a list of the numbers up to 50 not yet on display.
 Day 2
(Prior to this day, students have made the array cards from Investigations, Unit 5, Investigation 3.2 and 3.3)

Multiples Exploration: (For ideas see Investigations Unit 5, Inv. 2, Sessions 2.1 and 2.2)
  • Finding Patterns and Verbally Describing:  Using a 100 chart, students color in multiples of 5 then circle multiples of 10 on the same chart.  They notice patterns and verbally describe what they  notice.  Focus on precise description of the patterns they see.  For example, "Multiples of of 5 all end in 5 or 0."  Tomorrow they will write about these patterns.
  • You could also have students write out each factor pair with its matching equivalent repeated addition and product. (see Math Expressions Unit 1).  Notice patterns. (2 x 5 = 5 + 5 = 10)

Lesson: Investigations Unit 5, Session 3.4 - Array Games, Part 1 - Play Factor Pairs (Combinations I Know/Combinations I Don't Know) *Have students pull out the 1's, 5's, and 10's array cards.  Those are the factors (card sets) they will work with this week.*
  • Using arrays to find a product by skip counting by one of its dimensions
  • Identifying and learning multiplication combinations not yet known
  • Using known multiplication combinations to determine the product of more difficult combinations
Students play Factor Pairs with their array cards and identify multiplication facts they know and those they are working on.

  • Sharing what you found in multiples pattern:  Students take their shaded 100s charts and the written descriptions of patterns . . . to music, they walk around and stop when the music stops.  They share what they noticed.  Call on a few students to share out what their partners said.
