Students make lists of things that come in groups of 2 to 12 and use the lists to create multiplication situations. They solve teacher- and class-generated multiplication problems.

Materials:  
  • Connecting cubes (50 per pair; as needed)
  • Construction paper 11" × 17" Label 11 sheets, with one label on each sheet: “Things That Come in 2s”, “Things That Come in 3s”, and so on to “Things That Come in 12s”.

Multiplication Stories (2 Days)
  • The lesson comes from Lessons for Introducing Multiplication​, Ch. 4, pp. 35 - 48.  It is explained in a video embedded in the article, Word Problems, Don't Put the Cart Before the Horse, by Marilyn Burns.  This is a great lesson with nice modeling by Marilyn Burns in the Video.  Watch it and then teach it: 
Supplement with:
Investigations, U 5, Inv 1, Session 1.3:  Solving Multiplication Problems 
  • Students are introduced to the Ten-Minute Math activity Counting Around the Class.
  • They solve problems about multiplication situations.
  • CC Adaptation Teaching Note for Problems about Missing Factors:  When discussing problems about a missing factor, model various ways to use notation to represent the problem: 5 × __ = 30, 5 × ? = 30, and 5 × □ = 30.​
  • Student Activity Book pp. 4–7
    Student Math Handbook pp. 39, 40–41Session 1.3 offers some nice supplemental practice:
